However, you’ll need to tap the next panel into position, which may be difficult without assistance. Tap the block until the board is securely in place. Then, using the tongue, nail it on. Tongue And Groove’s Cousin Lock And Fold
Basic tongue and groove joinery is a straight tongue that horizontally slides into a straight groove. To prevent the boards from moving, nails or flooring staples are driven into the tongues. These fasteners attach directly to the sub-floor.
As laminate flooring manufacturers developed new ways of joining boards, a slightly different technique came aboutfloating floors. Floating floors attach only to themselves, from one board to the next, not the sub-floor. Luxury vinyl flooring capitalized on laminate’s innovations, and in many ways improved on them.
At first, glue was used to join tongues to grooves. But an easier method, lock and fold, was developed to allow the tongues to fit into the grooves without glue or fasteners.
Lock and fold involves angling one board onto the adjoining board and then folding it downward. This is significantly different from traditional tongue and groove in that horizontal movement, as well as vertical, is kept in check. There’s still room for some microscopic horizontal movement, but nowhere near the type of movement allowed by classic tongue and groove.

Visually speaking, shiplap and tongue and groove wood paneling appear quite similar. Once they are installed, they look comparable, which is why many confuse the two. However, its beneath the surface where there is a notable difference. Examine each profiled edge of these two types of panels planks and youll see what distinguishes the two.
Running down the length of the shiplap planks edge, you will see it has a small L-shaped notch in the profile. When installed, each L-shaped notch supports the next plank, whether stacking on a wall or attaching to a ceiling. Essentially, the notches also called a rabbet joint will slide and fit together, overlapping ever-so-slightly like steps. Sometimes, shiplap planks will offer a gentle bevel along the longer edges to offer a softer, more rounded look to a finished paneling project.
Tongue and groove wood paneling is a bit different in the way the lengths profiles snap together. Unlike a shiplap panelings single L-shaped rabbet joint, tongue and groove paneling has a corresponding dual profile system. On one lengths side, you will find a small T-shaped projection in the center, while the other side will have a U-shaped indentation. When installing, each panels tongue locks into place with the next panels groove, hence the name. While you can tongue and groove planks with a softly beveled edge, youll more likely come across them unbeveled. Overall, it gives a tighter, cleaner appearance than shiplap.

Where To Find Primed Tongue And Groove
Getting info online proved to be the easy part.
Actually finding the wood planks in a store was almost impossible.
We went to every store in our area that sold lumber until we found them in our local Home Depot and Lowes.
They had primed tongue and groove pine planks in 8 and 12-foot lengths…exactly what we were hoping to find.
Below is what the display looked like in the store. You’ll note that the side showing in the store display looks different that the plain sided planks on the ceiling.
I’ve gotten a lot of comments and emails about this so I will say that it is, in fact, the same board.
It simply has two sides .
We went with the plain side for our ceiling because it was the look I was going for.
I’ve often heard people saying that the tongue and groove wood planks that they have been able to find have been very expensive.
I thought the ones that we got were very reasonable.
We ended up spending around $275 just for the planks for our 13’x 8′ kitchen.
All of our planks and supplies for this kitchen remodel project were bought at The Home Depot.
The installation wasn’t terrible but painting it was literally a pain in the neck.
We kept saying that we were so happy that we spent the extra money on the primed planks the whole time we painted.
The primed planks were well worth the few extra dollars.
A little extra tidbit…
I did find a few spots where a small amount of sap seeped through.
I just noticed because…well, I’m weird like that.
